In 2009, Harlow Renaissance secured £150,000 English Heritage funding for the delivery of a Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme in the Old Harlow Conservation Area. In addition, there are contributions totalling £150,000 from Harlow Renaissance and Harlow Council, bringing the grant available to total of £300,000. The support of Harlow Civic Society was instrumental in helping to secure the external funding.
The scheme is a 5 year grant programme (2010-2015) for the preservation and enhancement of buildings in the conservation area and aims to reintroduce confidence in this heritage area and help to improve the economic performance of retailers and businesses located within the High Street, Market Street and Fore Street. The project complements the on-going regeneration of Old Harlow and the planned new housing developments, seeking to capitalise on its potential as a tourist attraction for visitors to the town.
The works delivered through the scheme fall within the following categories:
- Repairs to shopfronts
- Reinstatement of lost features including traditional windows and doors.
- Structural repairs to the external parts of buildings
