Introduction from Andrew Bramidge |
 |
Welcome to the first edition of the Harlow Renaissance e-newsletter, designed to keep partners and key contacts informed about our work. The newsletter will also be available publicly via our website. Given the growth in our activity from this year we aim to produce the newsletter every two months to provide you with up-to-date information. It will feature project updates, information about forthcoming events and opportunities to provide feedback on our work. We also hope that it will stimulate some dialogue about the regeneration and growth of Harlow.
In this edition we have a focus on the reaction to the plans for the re-development of Town Centre North, Harlow Renaissance’s Business Plan for 2009 – 2011 and the rebranding of the town with “Harlow – see something different”.
We believe that Harlow has an exciting future and that it is a place of almost unparalleled opportunity. Harlow Renaissance is committed to playing a major role in the delivery of this future and will bring forward projects and ideas to realise this. We hope that you find this newsletter interesting and would appreciate any feedback on its structure and content.

Public interest in the proposals for the development of Harlow’s Town Centre North has attracted more than 2,500 visitors to two major Public Exhibitions over the summer.
People flocked in to see the proposals, talk to the Development Team and comment on the scheme at a four day exhibition in Broadwalk at the beginning of July and at the Harlow Renaissance Marquee at the Harlow Town Show at the beginning of September. Harlow Council and Stockland, the joint venture partners for the project, have described the response to the plans as “hugely encouraging”.

Harlow Renaissance has released its Business Plan for the period 2009 – 11, following approval by the company’s Board and funders. Despite challenging economic conditions, the focus of this business plan is on delivery and to facilitate some real change in Harlow. During this two year period we aim to:
- complete new housing at three of the town’s neighbourhood centres
- secure approval for the re-development of the town centre
- see work start on the re-development of some of Harlow’s Priority Estates
- undertake the development work on a new bypass and motorway junction
- secure the improvement of Harlow Town Station
- contribute to the finalisation of bold plans to transform the town
- deliver a marketing and branding programme to promote Harlow and secure future investment
The Business Plan sets out the challenges facing Harlow as we see them, outlines our vision for the town and then identifies the mechanisms by which we will start to deliver this. Clearly this is a long term process but we aim to make significant progress towards our goals in this next two year period.

Harlow Renaissance is working with Harlow Council, Harlow 2020, and town-wide businesses and organisations to update perceptions on Harlow and to promote the town as the informed choice to live, work, invest and visit.
A new brand mark and toolkit has been produced which set out the aims and objectives for the campaign. At its heart is the essence that the creation of a brand is more than just a logo – it is the image and reputation that we want associated with the town both today and tomorrow.

Harlow’s newest sculpture has been unveiled at Harlow's town park paddling pool.
“Shoal” by artist Will Spankie joined Harlow’s internationally recognised sculpture collection, which has led to the town being designated as the country’s first “Sculpture Town”. The sculpture was chosen by the public as joint winner of Harlow Renaissance’s Hotspots competition 2008.
