The latest Window Works project is being installed in the Town Centre today. Artwork created by students at Harlow College will be on display in an empty retail unit on the first floor of the Harvey Centre.
The installation has been created by first year National Diploma in Graphic Design and Foundation Diploma in Art and Design students who have been working on a project to design posters promoting Harlow’s sculpture collection. Exploring a range of printmaking techniques the students have used the sculptures of Harlow as inspiration. This project contributes to their course work and will become part of their final portfolio.
In addition, the Harlow College students are working with the Friends of Harlow Sculpture Collection to transform some of the finished designs into posters. These will be used in Harlow and the surrounding area to promote the tours, talks and other events organised by The Friends to raise awareness of Harlow’s unique cultural heritage.
A spokesperson from Harlow College said:
“Here at Harlow College we believe that an important part of any student’s education is to have an opportunity to work on ‘live’ briefs. This is where students have direct contact with external clients who provide regular feedback and allows the students to gain real life experience. There was a wonderful creative buzz around the studio as Harlow’s rich cultural heritage was being used to bring their poster designs to life.”
A spokesperson from the Friends of Harlow Sculpture Collection said:
“These posters will create a lovely display, not just for the evident artistic colour and design skills but in the humour that comes through with the eye catching captions. I think they will not only bring pleasure and highlight Harlow's heritage with our local residents but also promote Harlow in a positive light to those further a field who may then be attracted to come and see our town and its collection of sculptures for themselves. A fun display which is a real credit to Harlow College and the art students.”
Window Works, a project facilitated by Harlow Council and Harlow Renaissance, aims to decorate and disguise empty retail units, helping the town centre to become a more colourful and exciting place to shop, work and visit.
Over the coming months Window Works will be bringing together more local people and artists to create a series of vibrant artworks throughout the town centre. Professional artists and local amateur painting groups will create artworks alongside schools, the college, young people and shoppers.
